Library Instruction

The goal of the library instruction program is to support classroom instruction by helping students to develop 21st century information literacy skills.  Regardless of discipline or career goals, students will need to be able to find, evaluate, and use information effectively and ethically to accomplish tasks.

Information literate learners are able to not only identify that information is needed, but what information sources are appropriate for that need and are able to apply their skills to locating appropriate information and using it in an ethical manner.  More than just library skills, information literacy encompasses research skills, critical thinking, information ethics, and information technology.

The library's instructional design is based upon the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards and supports the mission of West Virginia Wesleyan College to "graduate broadly educated men and women who:

  • Think critically and creatively,
  • Communicate effectively,
  • Act responsibly, and
  • Demonstrate their local and world citizenship through service."

Embedded Librarians

Embedded librarians are integrated into the course experience to encourage information literacy skill building in conjunction with content teaching. The embedded librarians work with instructors to develop assignments which best promote information literacy goals and which use encourage use of library resources. Embedded librarians often meet with the class on multiple occasions to help students complete research assignments in steps or stages. Additionally, students are introduced early to the course librarian, and as a group, they are encouraged to seek out their assigned librarian for assistance or research guidance.

If you would like to include an embedded librarian in your course, email Beth Rogers.

Available Instruction Offerings

This is a partial list of instructional presentations available from the library's instruction staff. Some presentations can be combined into a single presentation to best fit your classroom needs. Presentations can also be customized to fit your particular course or assignment. The more immediately relevant the information we present is to students, the more likely they are to use or remember it.
